German war hammer, copy of an original circa 1350 in the National Museum in Nuremberg. From the heyday of transitional harness, maille reinforced with plate, this war hammer was used to "crack open" armor plate to get at the juicy bits inside. The four point coronel shaped head caused more damage at the point of impact than a flat faced head. Back spike beak, also known as a bec de corbin or raven's beak, served to poke holes in armor via the church-key can-opener effect.
